History of King, NC
King, North Carolina, is a small but mighty city located in Stokes County. It is known as a commuter town and a hot spot for shopping, dining, and entertainment. The town is part of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area, which also includes Winston-Salem and Greensboro. There are several manufacturing and retail facilities in and around the city. Several restaurants are also open and thriving, giving the city a cosmopolitan flair.
One of the best things about this small town is its stout community spirit. The aforementioned one-two punch of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the nearby New River Trail make it an ideal choice for outdoor enthusiasts. And when it comes to convenience, the city has it with shopping centers, medical centers, and the county fairgrounds. Likewise, its proximity to Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Charlotte means that residents have easy access to a variety of cultural events, concerts, and sporting events. A new YMCA facility and two large public parks add to the appeal.
Another big draw is the proximity of the city to Wake Forest University and Charlotte Motor Speedway, both of which are within a reasonable driving distance. And, of course, the town is located within an hour’s drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the historic Creeper Trail in Virginia.
KingFest, King NC
King, North Carolina has a lot of annual events to offer. The first Saturday in October is when they host their annual festival, which is called KingFest. This event includes contests, arts & crafts, and a classic car show. You can also enjoy live music and food. There is even a miniature train for the kids.
The festival starts at 10 am and ends at 5 pm, and you can find plenty of activities for all ages. Some of the fun activities include youth and adult fishing tournaments, corn hole competitions, horseshoe pitching, and heritage demonstrations. During the festival, you can also attend live music concerts featuring bluegrass, oldies, and 50’s music.
King is home to many parks. Central Park is a 25-acre natural area with a pond, an outdoor amphitheater, and a lighted walking trail. The park also hosts an indoor two-story community building, a soccer field, a children’s play area, and a lighted ball field.
You can also check out Pilot Mountain State Park, a 10-mile drive away. The mountain is one of the most prominent landmarks in the state. Also, the city is only 20 minutes from Winston-Salem. Other schools nearby include Wake Forest University, High Point University, and Winston-Salem State University.
